Stellar Absolute Magnitudes via the Statistical Parallax Method

چکیده

I review statistical parallax absolute magnitude determinations which employ data from the Hipparcos satellite for RR Lyrae and Cepheid variables, and for several other stellar classes. Five groups have studied the RR Lyrae stars, and the results are reassuringly consistent: MV (RR) = 0.77 ± 0.13 mag at [Fe/H] = –1.6 dex. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations showed that systematic errors are small (∼0.03 mag or less), and corrections for them were applied in the above result. The RR Lyrae result is thus very secure. A statistical parallax study of Cepheids found the Period–Luminosity zero-point to be considerably fainter than studies based on Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes. The distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud derived from this zero-point is in excellent agreement with that derived using the RR Lyrae result. I discuss why the statistical parallax absolute magnitude calibrations differ with some other RR Lyrae and Cepheid calibrations. Subject headings: statistical parallax; variable stars; RR Lyrae stars; Cepheids

Systematics of RR Lyrae Statistical Parallax III: Apparent Magnitudes and Extinctions

We sing the praises of the central limit theorem. Having previously removed all other possible causes of significant systematic error in the statistical parallax determination of RR Lyrae absolute magnitudes, we investigate systematic errors from two final sources of input data: apparent magnitudes and extinctions. We find corrections due to each of about 0.05 mag, i.e., about half the statisti...

On the Hipparcos parallaxes of O stars

We compare the absolute visual magnitude of the majority of bright O stars in the sky as predicted from their spectral type with the absolute magnitude calculated from their apparent magnitude and the Hipparcos parallax. We find that many stars appear to be much fainter than expected, up to five magnitudes. We find no evidence for a correlation between magnitude differences and the stellar rota...

Hipparcos absolute magnitudes for metal rich K giants and the calibration of DDO photometry

Parallaxes for 581 bright K giants have been determined using the Hipparcos satellite. We combine the trigonometric parallaxes with ground based photometric data to determine the K giant absolute magnitudes. For all these giants, absolute magnitude estimates can also be made using the intermediate band photometric DDO system (Janes 1975, 1979). We compare the DDO absolute magnitudes with the ve...

Distances and absolute magnitudes from trigonometric parallaxes

In astrophysical applications, derived quantities like distances, absolute magnitudes and velocities are used instead of the observed quantities, such as parallaxes and proper motions. As the observed values are affected by random errors and selection effects, the estimates of the astrophysical quantities can be biased if a correct statistical treatment is not used. This paper presents and disc...

Absolute Magnitudes of Chemically Peculiar

The position of diierent kinds of CP stars of the upper Main Sequence (i.e. Am stars and the four categories of Ap stars: He-weak, HgMn, Si and SrCrEu) in the HR diagram is examined. Using only those stars having a parallax with a relative error smaller than 0.14 ((M v) 0:3) and an absolutely certain peculiarity, it is shown that their absolute magnitudes are similar to those obtained from CP s...
